I’m not mad - but I am slightly hurt that you’re implying that I didn’t work just as hard as you two. We all worked really hard for our degrees and congrats that you got a job. Really.
But I also worked my ass off at school and I’m hurt that you are suggesting that I didn’t. I’m sorry I didn’t do an honors project but I did have a job and I volunteered every week. Unfortunately for me the field I would like to go into, non-profits/crisis shelters, rely a lot on volunteer work and hardly every hire full time employees. And I am sending out my resume and pointing out that I have experience. But it’s getting shot down. And that fucking sucks. And the only reason I have an internship right now is because I had to beg them to let me work for them while not getting paid because this guy is cutting all his employees hours. And I’m living off my savings, which is scary. And I’m applying for jobs that will get me money but not the necessary experience to get a better job in a field I like that isn’t hiring anyway.
I didn’t mean to start a big to-do. I was simply posting a quote from a friend that I identified with. ugh. sorry next time I’ll keep my thoughts to myself.

Sorry to offend (I dont think Autumn or I meant it that way). I really was commenting on the quote - not your life or school work or Laura’s life or school work.
The quote clearly (to me) said that there was hard work put into school, but nowhere else. The quote didn’t say (to me) “I worked my ass off completely to 100% of my ability. And still get nothing”.
I know you worked hard at school. I know you volunteered, and I know you had a job. I don’t know what the communications job market is like, and I don’t know what the psychology job market is like. But maybe there are people that did more than you — and maybe those people are applying to the same places you are. The market is really competitive, in every field. It sucks. But if they did more, they definitely deserve it first. If it were a basketball team, they’d pick the player with the most experience and skill over the player with a lot of spunk.
I’m sorry you guys are having a hard time. You just have to remember that there are TONS of people looking for jobs. I mean, my stepdad has been looking for work for a year and a half now. He has 26 years experience in the engineering field, a degree, and tons of certificates (and fucking military awards for this shit) — still nothing. It’s really not just you (10% unemployment in NC - probably higher elsewhere). He’s old and his rheumatoid arthritis is making his hands look fucked up. No one wants to hire an old sick person — just like no one wants to hire someone with no experience. You get the shit end of the stick on both sides of the playground.
Everything’s terrible. Sorry this blew up.

Alright, I totally feel you guys on the shitty job market - I mean why else would I be in grad school right now - and I understand that being un/underemployed sucks. But in all seriousness, carrying your degree around to employers and showing them how much you learned isn’t enough in today’s market. You need to also carry around your resume so you can say, “Oh hey, this diploma with honors isn’t enough for you? Well, okay, here’s this other piece of paper that outlines what I can DO. Here’s my job experience, internship experience, volunteer work and references. Proof that I can DO what my degree says I can.” No, I don’t think it’s fun to work, TA, and go to school full-time, but I do that because I have to.
